Senate Meeting moved to Friday, May 8th

UPDATE:
This morning when we arrived at the Senate meeting, we were told that the discussion of AB 296 had been removed from the meeting agenda. I just received a call from Senator Schneider's office letting me know that AB 296 has been rescheduled for Friday morning, May 8th, at 8am. Please join us at the meeting so we can be sure that our lawmakers know that we care about this issue. Updated links and info are below. If you cannot attend, please contact your senator and let him or her know that the senior and disability community is concerned about this bill.

Important Senate Meeting on May 6th

Las Vegas Seniors and People with Disabilities Need Better Transportation.

Bill before the Nevada Senate would restrict transportation options.

Now that the Vegas cab companies have stopped Handicab's bid for a disability-friendly cab service, it looks like they are  going after nonprofits who transport seniors and people with disabilities.

Existing taxi companies get their way--no new service for the disabled.

An effort to bring a new taxicab company to Clark County with a specific mission was shot down Tuesday morning. The company is called Handicab and aims to serve the disabled.

Handicab claims disabled customers are ignored by other cab companies.

Attorneys for taxi cab companies were at the hearing. They filed a petition to stop Handicab from moving forward. Their argument was that there is no demand for Handicab to exist, especially since it would directly threaten taxi cab businesses.

Undercover sting exposes widespread discrimination by taxi drivers

If a taxi driver had a choice between picking up a female passenger or a couple of regular guys, which fare would the driver select? The woman would lose out every time says local lawyer Al Marquis.

To prove his point, Marquis choreographed his own undercover investigation and says he has clear evidence of widespread discrimination against women and other potential customers.

Transportation Woes: taxi troubles
Summerlin View, December 9, 2008

Getting a cab may soon become easier, especially if you're physically disabled. Rob Martin, Tim Harney and Philip Griffith are looking to launch a new company, called Handicab.

Although it will serve all customers, the venture's fleet will be equipped to accommodate the needs of most physically handicapped individuals.

"Everybody has to wait for a cab if you're a local," Martin said. "That happens to most people maybe once a year. But if you're disabled, it's not once a year. It's more like every day."

Elderly and disabled: transportation difficult to find

For elderly and disabled valley residents who are unable to drive and don’t have relatives or friends available to give them rides, getting to medical appointments, social services offices, recreational activities and shopping centers is often difficult.

Paratransits, disabled riders face doubled fares

The Regional Transportation Commission is considering three options to increase fares for the service. The RTC, which also provides regular bus service to Clark County, is required by the federal Americans with Disabilities Act to provide roughly equivalent transportation services to people who cannot use the regular service.

About 2,400 people a day, from a pool of more than 9,000 eligible riders, use paratransit services. Those riders are served by 176 paratransit vehicles, essentially smaller sized and specially equipped buses.

The cost of the service for disabled riders, who are screened to ensure eligibility, is $1. But the actual cost to the RTC is about $31 per ride.

Bus system raises fares

Saying it will help pay for future expansions to its bus service, the Regional Transportation Commission on Thursday approved the valley mass transit system's first bus fare increase in six years.

Cab Ride to ‘burbs Can Be a Tough Find

It’s tough to say how often cabbies refuse the trip. But more than a dozen people interviewed for this story said they had been refused a ride to Summerlin or Henderson from either the Strip or downtown — or that it had been suggested that only a large tip would make it worth the driver’s time (Full disclosure: This has happened to Sun reporters).

Anti-competitive, anti-free market, anti-American, right?

Imagine the chaos that would ensue if every time MGM Mirage wanted to expand one of its casinos, its competitors at Harrah's and Wynn Las Vegas and the Venetian and - well, everybody - could object because it would take business away from the rest of the industry.

It would be anti-competitive, anti-free market, anti-American, right?
